Dr. Downs is the program director for the residency program in colon & rectal surgery at Parkland and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospitals in Dallas. Dr. Downs has conducted his private practice as a part of Texas Colon & Rectal Specialists since 1993.
Dealing with patient wellness and overcoming potential colorectal problems in his practice, Dr. Downs believes preparation and education is key and has been a proponent of preparation in many areas of his surgical career. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, following Operation Desert Storm, Dr. Downs published an article on “Preparation for Mass Combat Casualties” for Emergency Care Quarterly. He has also just recently been recognized by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas as being one of 30 physicians who ranked in the Top 1% in the nation for patient satisfaction in 2015.
Dr. Downs’ colorectal insight makes him one of the top colon doctors Dallas patients trust. His practice spans multiple colorectal diseases and treatments including colonoscopy performed for colorectal cancer screening, removal of polyps, and evaluation of bowel evacuation disorders. Dr. Downs offers specialized services such as anal cancer screening for high-risk patients, especially those with HIV disease. He
also employs a variety of treatment options for hemorrhoids including medical therapy, rubber band ligation, infrared
coagulation and surgical incision. Dr. Downs has also recently added advanced robotic surgery training with the da
Vinci® Surgical System to his list of minimally invasive approaches to colorectal disorders.
Dr. Downs claims a variety of interests and hobbies ranging from bluegrass music to water polo. He is an enthusiastic bicyclist, loves to swim, and still finds time to enjoy another favored pastime, reading. He and his wife, Carol Lee, reside in Dallas and have two children.
